The wine has a pale gold color and a seductive expression of white fruits (pear, peach) and white flowers (hawthorn, acacia). On the palate, the wine is fresh and balanced, slightly toasted, with a saline, lemony finish.
In southern Burgundy, the latest Appellation Villages du Mâconnais (February 1999), located 20 km north of Mâcon, replaces the former Appellations Mâcon-Clessé and Mâcon-Viré. The 219-hectare Viré-Clessé appellation extends over 2 north-south-facing hillsides, composed of Bajocian limestone and marl and Oxfordian limestone strata at altitudes ranging from 200 to 440 meters. Usually renowned for its rich, sometimes over-ripe wines, the Viré-Clessé PDO can also produce lively, taut wines, like this 'Jus de Fructidor' cuvée, harvested before over-ripeness and inspired by the month of Fructidor in the revolutionary calendar, starting on August 18.
