15th century - The Beaujolais roots

In 1407 it is mentioned a witness named Jehan BURRIER at the famous trial to fix the border between Burgundy (Duchy) and Beaujolais (Kingdom of France). In 1469, a Royal Sergeant named BURRIER is sent by King of France Louis the 11th to maintain order in the district of La-Chapelle-de-Guinchay, adjacent village to Moulin-à-Vent. Their descendants became winegrowers in this part of Beaujolais. One of the hamlets is still called Les Burriers. 'Les Burriers'.

Our Mâconnais branch has been family DESHAIRES: they were winegrowers in Vergisson and Fuissé for generations, at least since the 17th century. In 1850 François DESHAIRES (1814-1890) and his family arrived to Château de Beauregard as tenant farmer (métayer). At that time Beauregard was still owned by founder Jean PASQUIER (1768-1850).

François DESHAIRES and his son Joseph DESHAIRES (1850-1929) bought the vineyards and part of the buildings in 1854 and then gradually the entire Château de Beauregard estate until 1883.

Pierre-Antoine BURRIER (1843-1910) - mayor of Saint-Symphorien-d'Ancelles (adjacent village to Moulin à Vent) - winemaker, cooper and wine merchant, married in 1872 Joséphine TOURNISSOUX (1852-1932), heiress to a property and vineyard in Fleurie (hamlet of Poncié), which is still nowadays owned by Château de Beauregard.

Marc Burrier (1873-1915) married in 1899 Jeanne Deshaires (1876-1965), only daughter of Joseph Deshaires and heiress of Château de Beauregard. Thus BURRIER and DESHAIRES families put together their vineyards of Fleurie and Fuissé.

Unfortunately Marc BURRIER died very young, aged 42, and two of his sons must took over the wine business: Joseph Burrier (1902-1983), at the Château de Beauregard and Georges Burrier (1903-1967) at the Domaine Georges Burrier. The wedding of Joseph in 1927 with Germaine VINCENT, heiress of reputed vineyards in Fuissé, made Château de Beauregard one of the major properties of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.

Jacques BURRIER (1937-2021), son of Joseph, took the head of the estate in 1964, and founded Maison Joseph Burrier in 1977 in order to expend his winemaker activity to other appellations of Mâconnais and Beaujolais.

Frédéric Marc Burrier succeeded to father Jacques in 1999 and started a policy of purchase or farming of new vineyards (2003 : Domaine Georges Burrier, 2007 : Domaine Joseph Burrier, 2012 : Château du Clos, 2016 Domaine de la Rochette). He also promote a viticulture without chemical inputs and nowadays most of the company vineyards are organic cultivated. From 2004 to 2020 he leads the UNION of the Pouilly-Fuissé growers which has successfully managed the recognition of 22 Pouilly-Fuissé Premiers Crus.

2020 - Recognition of Premiers Crus in Pouilly-Fuissé

On the 20th of October 2020, the INAO officially recognized 22 ‘Climats’ of Pouilly-Fuissé to become «Premier Cru». A great success for the Appellation and its growers after 12 years of hard work alongside with INAO. As far as Château de Beauregard is concerned, 6 of our reputed Climats become 1st Crus. At Château du Clos, two thirds of the Clos become 1st Cru ‘Pouilly’.

With Julien, Baptiste and Bérenger Burrier, respectively nephew and sons of Frédéric, it is the 7th generation arriving in the managing team of Château de Beauregard and Maison Burrier.
