The terroir and natural, low-intervention winemaking methods give Chardonnay an intense, complex expression, with toasty, flinty notes and the long, saline finish of a great white Burgundy.
At the southernmost tip of Burgundy, the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation covers 800 ha, 194 of which will be classified as Premiers Crus from the 2020 vintage. The villages of Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson make up its exclusive production area, in an exceptional natural setting: the world-famous rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, Jurassic limestone spurs culminating at 495 m and classified as a "Grand Site de France". The 1er Cru is located in the heart of Pouilly, a hamlet of the village of Solutré-Pouilly which gave its name to the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation as the cradle of the production of the great white wines of the Mâconnais: as early as the 18th century, Chardonnay was already being cultivated here, producing wines with a reputation comparable to those of the Côte d'Or. The Château du Clos vineyard, which has been certified organic since 2013, forms a veritable Burgundian Clos covering 3 hectares in a single block around the Château. Its soils, which slope slightly to the northeast at an altitude of 270 m, are composed of clay and scree over limestone marl, and are ideal for producing great white Burgundies that are complex, intense and long-lasting.
